Québec City in fall: an unexpected favorite from a seasoned traveler

My name is Barbara Taylor. I’ve traveled to more than 40 destinations around the world… and yet I have to admit it: Québec City truly stayed with me.

Arriving by cruise ship during peak foliage season, I discovered a city that feels like a masterpiece. Autumn shades, deep reds, bright oranges, and glowing golds, blend with the old rooftops and stone walls of Old Québec. It feels like Europe… but calmer, more authentic.

From my very first steps near Château Frontenac and Place d’Armes, I felt that unique sense of living history. Walking through the streets, passing the Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec, the Morrin Centre, and the fortifications, every detail seemed to tell a story.

What moved me most was the perfect balance between European architecture and grand nature. From the heights, the St. Lawrence River stretches as far as the eye can see, and in the distance, Île d’Orléans adds an almost poetic touch to the landscape.

And then there were Montmorency Falls.

Impressive. Powerful. Magnificent.

I thought I’d seen it all… but that sight reminded me why I still travel today. The force of the water, the colors all around, the crisp air, everything was perfect.

But what truly made the difference was the way I discovered the city. With a passionate guide, I learned, laughed, and understood Québec in a different way. It wasn’t just a tour, it was an experience.

Today, after 43 destinations, I can say this without hesitation:

Québec City is in my top 3 most beautiful places in the world.

And trust me… I’ve seen a few.
